How can robots help electricians?

The UK’s electrical industry is facing a skills shortage, with half of electrician companies unable to find enough workers to meet demand. As the shortage becomes more profound, firms are beginning to explore new solutions to keep up with the increasing workload.

In Denmark, the trade union Dansk El-Forbund and employers’ association TEKNIQ Arbejdsgiverne commissioned an independent study by HowToRobot to assess the potential of automation in the industry. Their research showed that up to 14% of the expected labour shortage in the electricity industry in 2030 could be solved by using robots and automation, suggesting that this technology could prove invaluable.

How can automation help electricians?

Automation in the electrical industry can take many forms, from robots assisting with heavy lifting to AI-powered tools that can quickly and accurately troubleshoot problems with electrical systems. Robots are well equipped to handle some of the more time-consuming or physically intensive work, like pulling cables through conduits or drilling holes for wiring. This allows electricians to focus on more complex tasks that require human expertise and judgement.

Additionally, robots equipped with sensors and cameras can provide detailed diagnostics, making electricians’ jobs easier and safer. This can protect human workers from dangerous conditions, such as hard-to-reach areas or hazardous environments, and can enable them to diagnose electrical faults without the need to manually inspect every wire or connection.
